Call me a detective because I think I cracked the code on how Elvis got fat.
Elvis Presley isn’t a celebrity associated with moderation and restraint. From his hair to his mansion, Elvis did everything big. It was part of his persona and what made Elvis Elvis.
I mean, when you think of Elvis do you think of the bad boy of the Ice Capades, Canadian figure skater Elvis Stojko?
Nah, you think of this guy:
Poor Elvis Stojko. Because he’s not even second in line when it comes to things associated with the word “Elvis.” That honor goes to…a sandwich.
For those who don’t know, Elvis Presley had himself a bit of a sweet tooth, and there was no food that satisfied that sweet fix more than a sandwich he invented himself — a peanut butter, bacon, and banana sandwich on white bread, drizzled with honey and fried up in butter.
Elvis liked these sandwiches so much, he allegedly could down as many as fifteen of them in one sitting. FIFTEEN. I don’t care how good something is, that’s exactly fourteen more than I would even want to try to shove down my piehole.
But again….
And since Elvis and Tennessee go together like, well, peanut butter and banana (and bacon, I guess), the list thought there was no sandwich that better represented the state than this sandwich. I feel like 99% of Tennessee might disagree with this sentiment, but the list has listed it, so we must eat it.
There’s something about a peanut butter-based sandwich that just doesn’t feel dinner-worthy. For both Massachusetts’ fluffernutter and Idaho’s peanut butter and huckleberry jam, we made them as lunchtime fare. But this sandwich felt kinda breakfasty. I mean, when you think about it, a ton of breakfast food is just dessert disguised as a meal: pancakes, french toast, muffins, breakfast pastries, crepes.
The Elvis sandwich is kinda like a fancy french toast minus the syrup plus more sugar. So breakfast it is!
The sandwich itself isn’t complicated but takes more time to make than I would have thought. First, we made the bacon and sauteed the bananas which took about ten minutes, then you put together the sandwiches, then you fry them in butter in the frying pan. All told it was about twenty minutes of work, but that’s still quite a bit of work for a simple sandwich.
Was it good? Of course it was! The ingredient list is literally a list of “things everyone finds tasty.” And it didn’t feel wrong eating it as a breakfast food. In fact, at your next family holiday gathering, make these for breakfast. It takes just as long to make a dozen as it does to make one, and everyone will think you did some sort of kitchen magic. And who doesn’t love it when people think they are magic??
For me, I think this may be a one-and-done type of sandwich. I tried it. I liked it. And it turns out, it will not be always on my mind and I can help (myself) by not falling in love with this sandwich.
But it was a nice change of pace from the usual Sunday oatmeal.
